This durable handheld GPS utilizes Garmin’s own inReach satellite network which provides coverage in areas where cellphone reception is poor or non-existent, allowing you to stay in touch and navigate deep into the backwoods. The Explorer+ can be used to send and receive text messages and email, post to social media, and even communicate with other inReach users in the field. Other functions of the Explorer+ include a tracking function. This feature allows you to share your location with family and friends or send waypoints at preselected time intervals so they can follow your progress using the MapShare portal on their computer or mobile device. This function can also be used to track your movements, exchange messages during your trip, and even embed your MapShare page on a blog, website or social media platform. For greater navigational capabilities and convenience, the Eathmate app can be downloaded to a compatible Apple or Android device, and then paired with the inReach Explorer+. This allows you to access unlimited maps, aerial imagery and U.S. NOAA charts, as well as all the other inReach features directly from your mobile device. In the event of an emergency, the inReach Explorer+ can be used to issue an SOS alert to Garmin’s IERCC emergency response coordination service. The IERCC is staffed 24 hours a day 365 days a year by trained professionals, who can track your device and contact and coordinate with emergency services or other to provide assistance. While help is on the way, the Garmin IERCC can stay in touch with you until help arrives or you no longer require assistance.
