EP 533: November Velvet Bucks, September Big Bulls, and Tasty Porcupines

This week I catch up with the man himself Ryan Lampers. Ryan is one of the best hunters I know and this year was nothing short of a banner year for Lampers. This week we catch up on the season and some of his highs and lows. Ryan drew a Nevada elk tag this year and in true Lampers fashion he put in a ton of time on that mountain. We chat about what he learned watching elk from pre rut through full rut. This is very interesting to hear outside of just being a very good hunting story. Most of us spend a a week or 10 days and we can always well here is what I think happened, but Lampers watched the whole picture from start to finish. In his attempt to see every bull in the unit before making a decision Lampers learned a ton about elk behavior.

We also talk about the weird phenomenon that multiple people have commented on of seeing more and more velvet bucks while rifle hunting. We talk about Montana mule deer, and Ryan gives some tips to hunting with the Hawkins for the late season. All in all a really great conversation with such a good human.

Ryan runs a live event every year called the Western Hunting Summit. These events are really really cool and one of the few high end events that has year after year return guests. This year will be at a new location and new speakers that will make this the best summit yet. These sell out quick so if you are interested claim your spot during presale. https://westernhuntingsummit.com/

Todays episode is made possible by Maven Optics an amazing Wyoming based optics company that I absolutely love. Whether you are in the market for rifle scopes or Bino’s Maven is the Company I would recommend hands down. I run the B series bino’s and in my opinion these are hands down the best bang for your buck. This year I got a pair of b.5 15×56’s and let me just say I am in love. I plan on using the b.5’s a lot this year. I have seen a been open country hunters who run only 15’s so I thought what the heck I’ll give it a try. I also just picked up an RS.3 rifle scope and will be using that on top of my 300 HCA some rifle hunts. Maven makes really high quality stuff and for the price you can’t touch it. The one thing you will hear great hunters say over and over is invest in quality glass. If you want to upgrade your hunting skills, head over to MavenBuilt .com and upgrade our glass.
